    Lithium-ion Battery Systems 101

    This tutorial provides an overview on Lithium-ion technology, how it works and why this battery chemistry requires a control system to manage the battery cells.  The tutorial content will provide the participant with the necessary information to ask the right questions when discussing battery system technologies.  The level of this tutorial is introductory for participants that are not familiar with Lithium-ion technology and Battery Systems.

    Testing of Large Format Battery Packs

    Testing is a form of research and is designed to answer critical questions about the design and safety performance of large format battery packs.  The speaker will share with the audience the need for testing and then demonstrate tests designed to answer critical questions that can aid the design of the battery and also the design of the system the battery will be used in.  Consideration for the test setup and intent of the test is critical, as merely running tests and not paying attention to test procedures can generate a system of “garbage procedure in and garbage data out”.  The participants in this tutorial will be introduced to the tests and capabilities offered by the speaker.

    BESS Systems and what the industry has learned to improve BESS designs

    BESS risk assessment is a critical phase in the design and commissioning of a BESS system.  Lithium-ion BESS system design is still in its infant stages and as a result BESS fires are not uncommon.  EPRI in the USA has developed a  BESS Failure Database showing BESS failures to date.  There are lessons to be learned from BESS failures and these lessons can be shared and incorporated in to a Risk assessment.  The participant in this tutorial will be introduced to BESS failures, common reasons for BESS fires, and how a risk assessment can help to mitigate BESS fire risk.
